The Communator

Can this be the last revolution?

Dedicated to the people of Burma, a documentary film on crossing borders, choice, resistance and home

At the border with Myanmar, M. and his comrades strive to live a life close to normal while fighting against the regime that occupies their country. Their eyes are fixed on that home they can’t go back to.

Two years after the coup that brought the military regime back to power in Myanmar, we lean into the lives, stories and emotions of the youngest generation of Burmese revolutionaries.

This is a story about youth, humanity, border and future.

WHY THIS FILM?

Myanmar is a place of extreme complexity, the crossing of many conflicts, interests and traditions; one place where identity, religion and ethnicity meet in hundred ways; a country where 60 years of military dictatorship have yet to kill the movement for democracy and resistance. In Myanmar, since the coup of February 2021, people have engaged in a new fight against the return of military rule.

This fight is where our film is born. It is the seed behind it, together with the love for a place which no longer exist as we knew it, together with having been privileged witness to the events that followed the coup and to the coming into place of a revolution fuelled by young people. But what is of this fight today, two years after the coup, when the world has slowly forgotten about it? And what does it mean today to be a revolutionary, beyond the images that populate our mind? These are the questions we moved from.

Meeting and knowing this youth, witnessing their lives, their decisions, the relationship they created in a place mostly hostile to them, far from the home they fight for, made sharing this story compelling. It was impossible not to reflect on the essence of words like freedom, resistance and choice. It was impossible not to reflect on the concept of home and our own relationship with it.

This is why we present this movie, as a window on an invisible reality, a unique microcosm, that has the power to talk to all of us.
